Community Conversation: “Translanguaging for Non-traditional Minority Adult Learners”

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Gloria “Joanne” Kramer ’05, Ed.D., will present “Translanguaging for Non-traditional Minority Adult Learners.”

Kramer, an assistant professor and the coordinator of TESOL at the School for Graduate Studies specializes in bibliotherapy, multicultural education, and literacy strategies for multilingual learners as well as the mental health of immigrant students.

In this session, Kramer will explore learning literacy using translanguaging, a pedagogical approach to teaching that uses a student’s ability to move fluidly between different languages.  In translanguaging, students can think in two or more languages simultaneously and use their home language as a vehicle to learn academic English.
