In recognition of WorldPRIDE month, Brian Frederick, Ph.D., an assistant professor of criminal justice, will present “LGBTQI+ Missing Young People.”
The presentation addresses the critical and complex issue of LGBTQI+ youth who go "missing." The problem touches on numerous social issues including homelessness, runaways, trafficking, and the challenges of unaccompanied asylum seekers. Frederick, who is also the academic coordinator for SUNY Empire’s undergraduate criminal justice program, will use current research to shed light on the vulnerabilities that disproportionately affect LGBTQI+ youth, including family rejection, systemic failures, and social marginalization.
The presentation will be hosted by Anna Oravcova, Ph.D., program coordinator in Prague.
Special guests Erika Vigerzi and Abby Preston, Safe Harbour Advocates from the Center for Youth in Rochester, New York will discuss their experiences and findings performing preventative work in human trafficking.
This Community Conversation is hosted by the Empire State University Foundation and International Education. To suggest ideas for future events, email AdvancementEvents@sunyempire.edu.
